The results of Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) held on June 27-28 under the conditions of Covid-19 pandemic have been announced. Regardless of the score, making the right choice will open the door to a good education and a successful career. Gokhan Menekse, Maltepe University Candidate Relations Specialist, warned the undecided candidates about their choice of profession and department to evaluate the preference period correctly and gave tips for making decision.
Stating that it is very important for the candidates to identify their interests and personal abilities, Menekse suggested that prospective students should definitely examine the special conditions of all programs and departments in the “2020 Preference Guide” prepared by Student Selection and Placement Center (OSYM) before making their university preferences.
THIS YEAR THE PERFORMANCE OF DISTANCE LEARNING MUST BE CONSIDERED
Noting the importance of universities in meeting the candidates' goals, Menekse also pointed out that the success of online education carried out by universities in Covid-19 pandemic was a very important criterion. Menekse said, “The performance of the university on education and training, especially the performance of distance education, which will no longer be out of the agenda anymore should be taken into consideration.” Menekse continued as follows:
“This is now a new criterion while choosing a university. The reports of universities in distance learning during Covid-19 pandemic period can be examined. It is now extremely important to evaluate technological infrastructures and conditions and platforms in which training took place over the past period.”
ACADEMIC STAFF SHOULD BE EXAMINED
Stating that it is very important for the candidates to identify their interests and personal abilities, Menekse suggested that the prospective students should definitely examine the special conditions of all programs and departments in the “2020 Preference Guide” prepared by Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) before making their university preferences.
SOCIAL AND INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED
Menekse stated that in the decision-making process of where to live and study in accordance with their prospective goals, students should do research about the academic fields these universities are best known for, and the career paths of the alumni after the graduation. He advised that students should also look into the social opportunities, collaborations, and international connections the universities have and make a decision with a realistic view.
He pointed that campus features should also definitely be taken into consideration. He suggested that students, according to their goals, should explore the library as a center of information, laboratories, research and application centers, technology transfer office, as well as social opportunities and sports complexes. Menekse said:
"In this day, besides receiving an education, improving one's social aspects, being multicultural, being able to communicate effectively and being able to carry out interdisciplinary studies have also become extremely important. Another point is university's national and international collaborations. Students should look into the collaborations established with public and private enterprises and the industry in the same area. They should also take the internship opportunities provided by these enterprises and their fields of application into consideration. Erasmus should not be seen as the only source of connection the university has with international institutions. The number of bilateral agreements should also be regarded and prospective students should especially take these points into account. "
PRINCIPLES FOR CHOOSING A CAREER
Menekşe pointed out to the importance of choosing a university bearing in mind that they will profess in the area they choose without getting tired of it all their lives. He indicated that families should support the student in this respect.
Menekşe advised that before arranging an order of choice, students should make preference list and rank their choices in accordance with the importance and priority of the preferred programs and universities and order of choice should be arranged by success rankings, not by the scores.
UNIVERSITIES PREPARE STUDENT FOR LIFE
Menekşe said that when today's ever-changing conditions are taken into consideration, acquiring professional skills is not enough by itself. He also highlighted the following points:
"What is important for the person is to find a suitable department or a program and success while constantly improving himself/herself in accordance with the requirements of the day. At this point, it is crucial for them to decide ahead of time on a university which not only promises them a degree but also a contribution to their personal growth in every aspect. To sum up, students should not regard universities as institutions in which only a professional training is received. They should be aware of the fact that universities provide formation to individuals in every aspect. "
The Counselor of Marmara Educational Institutions Nevin Çiftel stated that the relationship between YKS (Higher Education Institutions Exam) score and the goals students have is extremely important in prefering a university. She also advised that students should definitely have a detailed look at the academic staff, areas of expertise and professions.
Moreover, Çiftel who expressed that students should get support from choice guides also added that prospective students can be torn between reason and emotion in the choosing process and at this point, guides play a crucial role.
